Frequently Asked Questions
If you can’t find your question below feel free to contact us, and we’ll be happy to help.
Why see a Counselor?
Counseling can often be beneficial to individuals in a variety of ways. Counseling offers the opportunity for you to address areas of concerns you may have and can be of assistance in helping you overcome personal or situational challenges that interfere with your daily personal or social goals. Most people come to counseling when their usual ways of handling things aren’t working well for some reason, causing distress and frustration. Some are dealing with a diagnosis of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder.
What information is needed to get on the schedule with a counselor?
Submit Full name, DOB, phone number, address, and name(s) of your primary and secondary insurance payer(s) to know if we are in their network(s). If we are not in their networks, your policy may have out-of-network benefits. If not, you may choose to be a self-pay client.
What commercial insurances do you accept?
We are contracted with most commercial insurances. The full list is on our SERVICES page (Don’t see your insurance? Give us a call to find out more). View Current List Of Accepted Insurances Here
What is needed from my insurance to verify coverage?
Insurance ID, group ID, Employer, and plan name for both primary and secondary policies.
Do you offer self-pay sessions?
Yes, we require a valid credit card on file. See self-pay rates here.
What if I miss my appointment?
If you miss an appointment, it is your responsibility to reschedule. A NO-SHOW FEE of $100.00 will be charged to the card on file if an appointment is missed without notification. Emergent or situations out of your control are exceptions to the NO-SHOW FEE, contact Client Services to discuss further.
What are EAP sessions?
Employer Assistance Program (EAP) are sessions free for you. An employer pays premiums to an EAP payer who pays for your sessions.
Can I start EAP sessions right away?
First, we need authorization details (authorization number, expiration and start date).
What if I need to cancel my appointment?
If you must cancel your appointment, we ask that you notify us at least 24 hours in advance. You can utilize the patient portal or call Client Services.
How long does it take to get in to meet with a Counselor?
You can speak with Client Services right away (if you leave a message you’ll be contacted within 24 hours). We make it a priority to schedule appointments in a timely manner. Reach out to us whenever you are ready to start sessions.
Can I schedule a same-day appointment?
While we will try our hardest to accommodate your needs, however, same day appointments are subject to counselor availability. Call 281-826-9777 to inquire.
What do I do if I need help right away?
We are mindful that people may have an urgent need or be in an emergency. If you have a medical or mental health-related emergency outside of our Counseling Services regular business hours, please call 911 immediately. Additionally, you may receive 24/7 Crisis Support as follows: National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and Veterans Crisis Hotline 1-800-SUICIDE (784-2433), 1-800-273-TALK (8255). The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD 24 Hour Helpline (713) 970-7000
How long is a counseling session?
Counseling sessions last approximately 45-60 minutes. Please be punctual and let us know in advance if you are unable to keep your appointment.
What occurs during an initial session?
Time will be spent exploring your reason for seeking counseling, gathering history, background information, discussing your current functioning and needs. You and your Counselor will develop a plan for future support.
Can I fill out intake forms before initial session?
Yes, various forms are available on the portal and all must be completed prior to the first session.
How often would I meet with the Counselor?
You and the Counselor will decide how often you should meet. It is recommended to meet once a week or every other week.
Will my discussion with the Counselor be confidential?
All records and conversations are personal and confidential as set forth by federal and state laws. With few exceptions; 1) if the Counselor assesses you are a threat to yourself or someone else 2) if the Counselor learns of, or, have strong suspicions of abuse or neglect of a child, disabled person or elderly person 3) if legal proceedings require disclosure of your counseling sessions 4) if information is disclosed about client abuse or sexual exploitation by a previous mental health provider.
Can I talk to the counselor while I fill out the intake forms or bring them at a later session?
All forms must be completed prior to that first session. The practitioner can assist you in completing them during the first session, be aware, this will reduce time spent developing the goals and treatment plan.
If I see a Counselor, does that mean I am “weak or crazy”?
No, talking with a safe professional allows you to conform healthy responses to life issues and minimize unhealthy responses. Building healthy responses breaks the bondage of unhealthy self-talk. “What comes out of me is about me” means you can focus on your own response to life issues, build self-esteem, and be emotionally safe around others.
Can I schedule future appointments online?
Yes, we will send you an email with a link to a patient portal. The portal is created by responding to an invitation we send to the email address on file. Appointments with a short lead time require a phone call to the office at 281-826-9777. The portal allows you to view, cancel, reschedule, request new appointments and review documents.
What if I don’t have a portal login to schedule an appointment?
Call or text the office at 281-826-9777, or email clientservices@kdcctx.com. We can send you the invitation email or get your appointment set up by one of our staff.
